Friday, July 02, 2010 Final day in BKK. Last day is always the worse, cos there are still so many things to do but so little time! We woke up early so we can go Tesco to buy some food stuff hm and settled for breakfast bananaboat at swensens. how sinful is that. we actually wanted to have a real meal only to find out that they dont serve hot food in that outlet =\ Sights and sounds from the taxi. "sex stops global warming" tts so cool! We finally setted for Sizzler at siam center anyway cos i wanted to go to siam sq to look for the bag tt i didnt buy on the first day in bkk! Salad from the salad bar! remember wot i said abt having lots of quail eggs in bkk! quail egg doesnt seem as popular here. prob cos of the health consciousness of singaporeans Cream of mushroom with real bacon! the ones we are so used to in sg are actually imitation bacon if you look closely at the packaging! My mojito mocktail. dont really fancy the taste. its juz carbonated water with syrup and mint leaves. =\ Toast. This is yummy. i have o idea wot they put on it how did they make the surface so flat? Me with my bib waiting for my main course! baked potato! best i've ever had! their butter is juz so creamy and salty and yummy! i've nt tried the ones at Wendy's in SG though but i noted they have various varieties of baked potatoes as well. P's main. half rack ribs with chicken chop. The chicken chop is yummy and tender but the same cant be sad for the ribs. i guess they dont really specialise much in ribs. we shall stick to chicken chop nxt time we order. my sizzling grilled prawns! which explains why i needed that bib! this is really nice. i'm so glad i made this choice cos the portion is nt too big and the prawn is succulent n yummy! after eating and walking ard, i didnt manage to find my bag. i was quite bummed but we were in a rush to do our other task which is to go to Ruamkatanyu Foundation. Previously recommended by Ponsak on TV, its a charitable org. If you were to cab there, juz tell the cab driver you wanna go to Wat Hualamphong which is quite a famous temple a step away from this foundation. So this org is for coffin donation for those people who died without a kin in street accidents or if they are too poor to afford a decent last journey. it cost $500 baht to provide a simple coffin plus a white piece of cloth for the simple burial. approx to S$23. amazing isnt it? There are a row of staff sitting there, you juz have to fill up this pink slip of paper with your name and how many sets you wanna donate and pass to them. The staff there are generally very friendly but may nt speak in english. sign language is very powerful in this case otherwise some of them understand mandarin as well since its near the chinatown area of bkk =) after making payment, we are issued with the receipt which is meant to be burnt away outside the foundation juz like when we 求签we have to burn away the the 签 piece of paper =) The original pink slip of paper where we wrote our name on will be returned to us to paste onto the coffin. P putting glue on the pink paper and pasting it on the coffin. This is how simple the coffin look like, you may even mistaken it for cardboard boxes or sth. we saw alot of locals going there for donation as well. this foundation was set up after the tsunami cos during that time thousands of lives were lost and lot have no next of kin to give them a decent burial. Outside the foundation, we saw this lady selling animals for release. There are tortoises, eels, frogs, birds etc, but we have no idea where we could release the other amphibians so we opted to release birds instead. 1 cage of 5 birds cost S$1 to be released. we saw a thai family releasing birds with their children too. its common for them to release living being during special occasions such as bdae and such for blessings =) in sg, we dont really have such release shop available or nt that i know of, however i was told if you were to go to a market and see a live fish on the chopping board but stop it and release it, the karma is even bigger than anything else cos you juz saved a life! we also saw a cockerels on the street! Ruamkatanyu Foundation is our last stop before we headed to the airport. we really miss bkk and wanna go bk soon for more sightseeing and definitely shopping! >.< Labels: bangkok, food, thailand, travel Thursday, July 01, 2010 Day 5 Dinner. It seems very much like its an eating trip aik. We cabbed down to Chinatown in BKK and searched high and low for T&K Seafood and its at the corner of one of the street. A roadside restaurant which did not even have a decent shop space. The menu, the dude on the cover have the likeness of Jay Chou in caricature The roadside stall where we ate. Special Thai chili sauce! I stick to the red one. green always look like slime to me =\ we wanted to have luo han guo drink but they ran out of it so P got orange juice, and me being the weird one and having language barrier thought i was ordering grass jelly when in fact it turned out to be wheat grass! its the first time i tried wheat grass in my life and it ain't a very pleasant experience. i've gt sth with green stuff.. vegs n such. Stir fried sambal kang kong! delicious. its prob one of the few greens i'm nt mentally allergic to. Tom Yam Seafood. A trip to the land of thousand smiles is never complete without tom yam man! on a rainy day, this is the most shiok soup you can ever find! Crabmeat fried rice! This is nice! actually i really like thai lime, i wished more hawkers use thai lime instead of providing the usual calamasi for like hokkien prawn mee. Crab tang hoon! This is the best i tell you! this crab is 100X better than the one we had at somboon. This is the crab we are so used to eating! Definitely a must order no matter how broke you are! P was devouring the food and didnt even realise i took a pix of him! goes to show how gd the food was! The end result, we cleared everything cep a little of the kangkong as we wanted to save our tummy for more delicacies! Nam Sing! Also a recommendation by podders! They serve chrysanthemum tea that is super nice as compared to the wheat grass i have to drink earlier! fooling ard with the spring onion meant for the soup later. dont they practise chopping it in bkk? Sharksfin soup! i remembered having sharksfin soup when i visit bkk eons ago so it's somewhat a must eat? the sharksfin soup at nam sing is nt bad. taste as good as the thai village sharks fin restaurant in sg but at prob 1/3 the price =) My fave birdnest! actually i dont know how to differentiate bird nest so we juz order the moderately priced one but it taste nt bad kinda like jelly? haha We cabbed to Healthland Spa after tt! This place is heaven! a must go for every bkk trip! i did a body polish where i strip down bathe and have a lady scrub most part of my body as well as did a foot massage till i fell asleep. 2 hrs in total. its how gd it is =\\ so drooling over this now. Apparently its somewhat like our orchard road with more upmarket stalls, but too bad we were in a rush for time and didnt have time to walk ard. Saw a person selling goldfish on a stick under the bridge! This is so cool! So heres where we are headed to. Cabbages & Condoms restaurant as recommended by the NY Times! Its near Bedsupper Club in BKK! After 30m, here we are! the restaurant is set in sprawling lush greenery which kept the temperature rather cool =) clothes fashioned out of condoms and this is how it looks like upclose. A family of condom superheros! Finally inside the airconditioned comfort of the restaurant =) The cracker looked like wheat cracker but its actually quite yummy! slightly salty. In Bkk, I order coconut juice everyday cos its juz so cheap there, and i've never had bland and tasteless coconut. on the otherhand, coconut juice in sg is ex and prob made of syrup =\ Stir fried veggie! This is super super super delicious and crunchy! its a must order! Sweet chicken curry. This is nt bad, the chicken meat is very tender and easy to remove from the bone. However its slightly too sweet for my liking. Then we had our dessert cos we werent super hungry. Red ruby for me =) Chng Teng for P =) Wot do you expect for at cabbages and condoms? mints for an afterfood fresh mint? they give out condoms instead.
