Monday, May 24, 2010 Malacca Road Trip Part Day 1 I've bn on rd trips b4 but nt in SEA and certainly nt using our own car so initially i had some reservations. apart from that i've been totally totally looking forward to this trip cos i've bn overworked and badly needed to get away from work until.. i realise i have to bring my work along for the trip *sweats* There's no pix of the going there part cos p and i are both super tired from fri late night chillout at cozy haji lane the night b4 so we were both struggling to stay away while keeping an eye on his friend's car which is zooming at 180kmph. after approx 2.5hrs drive, we reached malacca. we departed at 8amish and was slightly delayed by a minor jam at tuas so here we are at an ultra ulu mall in malacca where at 11am its still pretty much empty. the same can be said abt our tummies so we settled for mary brown. yummy chicken =) but i'm more fascinated with their cup. looks so much like chip n dale! anyway i dont quite fancy the lemon tea cos its F&N can drink kind. i think MB is kinda cool cos they have swing seats within but cos our grp was too big (7pax) so we cant squeeze onto the bench =\ the entire set with 8pc meat 2coldslaw + 2 fries and 4 cups of water set us back by RM$49. but tt's juz an appetizer cos even more yummy street food awaits us at jonker!! after the starter, we drove into the town center of malacca and attempted to check in but failed.. the check in timing was strictly 2pm so we dumped our stuff back into the car and walked ard. a mega mall nearby with decent shops like Mango and A&W etc. me on the display outside the mall! i look like shit from the major lack of slp. noticed this shop selling sweet potatos! i've previously heard from gillian raving abt yummy sweet potatoes she had at genting so thinking it may be a franchise, we bot one. you get to choose a sweet potato yourself from the basket of cooked sweet potatos then the staff will proceed to weigh it and inform you of the cost, its RM1.50 for 100gm. so its pretty decent price. and the sweet potatos are pipping hot!! so we didnt eat it immediately. it seems super easy to cook, the dude juz pull out this handle and i guess its somewhat like an oven within to cook the sweet potato! its super yummy tho! and definitely a healthy snack! the basket of yummy uncooked sweet potatoes. since its an eating trip, we did not linger ard to shop. we walked on further in search of yummy food and passed by the iconic dutch sq =) there are plenty of these trishaws in the tourist district looking gaudy and playing extreme techno music. i've always wanted to try it but was afraid tt we'll get ripped off. the one in sg cost $50 per ride! anyway many also feel tt the trishaw in malacca look like the mode of transport for the dead cos of the flowery deco. this was our original destination but boy look at the queue. the little appetizer we had earlier helped us to 开胃so there's no way we will wait in line for so long!! so we walked on in search of the other food stalls. the iconic bldg as ur marker to know tt ur at jonker. this red bldg with a hugeass poster and 三叔公. they serve kinda yummy durian chendol and a heaven for tourist who wanna buy small gifts for friends and family back home. and we walked along jonker in the day. it can only be described as HOT and HUMID!! the usual pasar malam kinda things they sell. was kinda tempted to buy the slippers but was lazy to try. kinda regretting it now. hurhur. then there are this ultra cute chairs tt i didnt notice in my prev visit! i so wanna get them but offhand i could not think of a reason to use them. then there's this little girl who sell peanut candy! she was there when i went last yr too! i guess some things dont change, do they =) life goes on everyday. random man peddling magic tricks. so u think u wanna be the nxt liu qian? its definitely nt as easy as buying the cards. we gt conned once and bot this packet of magic cards. sure it definitely work its magic but the instructions are abt as long as the bible and you have to prac and prac such tt ppl wont be able to see thru the trick. so if ur thinking of impressing ur nxt date, think again. finally we reached the other restaurant we wanted to go! Famosa chicken rice ball. the reviews aint as good as the first one we saw previously which prolly explains y there are plenty of empty tables in the restaurant. the delectable menu. there are lots of stuff to choose from like ur cze char. the other one tt we wanted to go to initially only sell plain old chicken rice. and wot we've bn waiting for. the rice balls! yummy but it tasted fty made cos each of the balls are nicely rounded and looked alike. the rice is the main so the chicken is the side. you can choose either white chicken, roasted chicken but we juz opted for white chicken. its decent enuff =) this is my fave! the tofu is absolutely yummy! i've nvr tasted this texture of tofu in sg b4. i guess its juz the water there? or sth =)) we also ordered ipoh tau ghey and wonton soup but we were famished so there are no photos of them! the back of the restaurant is kinda a old baba hse itself. where there are old rickshaw carts, typical chinese emperor seats + robes for you to rent to take pix =) theres also a stairs tt lead to the upstairs where there are more seatings available. so prob they cater to large tour groups etc=) the view from the top. in the nostalgic black and white mode =) there's a pretty cool well at the backyard but there arent coins inside. the chinese walkway. its kinda perplexing as to whether its a nyonya style bldg or a olden chinese style bldg. overall the food is nt bad but the long queue chicken rice ball shop is definitely better. i guess as some restaurants get better, they upgrade to cross sell more stuff such tt they lose touch of the original food tt made them famous. random street stall selling cupcake shaped ice cream. looks ultra unique and definitely a good way to cool down in that sweltering heat. we bot the red bean flavour and its yummy! RM$1.30 hk kueh tt we bought. nvr seen it in hk too. tasted like normal kueh. a sweet ending for the hearty lunch=) Labels: food, travel
