esther, 161186We feel lonely, sometimes to the point of tears, but we don’t let those tears come because we are not supposed to cry. Or how we feel a surge of love for a partner but we don’t say anything because we’re frozen with the fear of what those words might do to the relationship. -Mitch Albom

Yet another gathering for yummy food! don't you just love eating with a group of people you feel really comfortable with? you can share and eat all the food you want without feeling AWKWARD! so this time we went to shashlik restaurant at far east shopping center. do not its far east shopping center as most people will forget and go on to their more popular neighbour, far east plaza =) FESC is the nondescript looking building with a jeweller and 7-11 downstairs wedged between Hilton Hotel and Liat Towers =) Do remember to call to place a reservation cos it can get pretty crowded at times! it was abt 60% full on a cool Thursday night despite it being at such a ulu place! So wot does shashlik serve? THEY DO RUSSIAN FOOD! okies i have never bn to Russia so i cant verify whether it taste similar or not but here goes the peektures! =) The outside of the restaurant. They have 2 entrances. I have no idea why. The interior. As i was the first to arrive, i went in first in case they gave up our reservation and my first thought was, it felt like a Dracula's castle. the dim lights and deco and all. We took quite a long time to decide on our order cos there were so many choices! Their speciality is beef! After we were served our orders, we were serve warm buns with SCS butter. The bun is nothing special but it tasted yummy with the butter! Vegetable borsch. hmm. its my first time tasting anything like this but i do enjoy this soup. according to bestie, it tasted like "chap chye overcooked in too much sauce" =) Mushroom soup! PASSED! i have really high standards for mushroom soup cos they are juz so many people selling overpriced mushroom soup when theirs easily pass off as campbell soup =\ one of my fave mushroom soup has gotta be Marche! that been said, i havent bn there in a long time! so anyway, Shashlik used real white mushroom in their soup with i <3 the soup is not too creamy so its nt jelat. Escargot, my little special request. remember my prev visit to the french restaurant crepes de arts where i tried escargot for the first time in my life? well, i fell in love with it so i juz wanna try if its the same! the escargot here are fatter and juicer or at least the one i had was. they used more herbs than butter so it wasnt really butter and kinda complements the escargot's taste =) i still prefer the ones i had at crepes des arts though as i <3 butter! YK's Beef straganoff. Its sliced beef in brown sauce with russian salad. as i dont eat beef, i cant vouch to how yummy this is, yk has liken the taste of the brown sauce to be slightly sour, but not the overpowering sort prob juz tangy. he finished the dish nonetheless. the russian salad is yummy and sweet! i had a portion of that with my food too and finished all of it! =) P's chicken dish. we totally forgot the name of it, but doesnt this look so interesting? its a piece of chicken resting on a bread "pillow" accordingly the bread is fried bread similar to those we have at western food stall crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. best to eat when hot! the chicken is hollow in the middle where there's broth within! it all dropped out when he cut the chicken into half. i had a bite of this and really love this! its mince chicken and its really tender and juicy! this is nice! mine! chicken shashlik. shashlik is skewer so this originally came in a skewer and when served, the waiteress will remove the meat on the skewer to place them on this hot plate in front of you. the chicken is well dont not overcooked but i felt it tasted normal nth super nice abt it. i <3 the onion on it tho' =) Kun & Boon's beef dish. done medium rare. they were sitting quite far from me so i didnt manage to get their opinion on this. bestie tried it and thinks its nt bad. the been comes with tendons. i remember that was wot she emphasized on haha! Bestie's beef shashlik. this beef does not have tendon. according to her, it felt like the beef meat have been pounded and tenderised prior to cooking so its an enjoyment to eat. its one of their must eat dishes! =) But the highlight of the dinner is really the dessert! Baked alaska! the white cream thingy in the middle! looks so fattening right! one good concept abt this restaurant is that they serve every diner's dish together, so there wont be awkward instances of having to wait for the other's food to arrive so as to be polite. cos many a times in the course of doing that your food will turn cold. so we were all happy we gt hot food tgt at the same time! cos of this arrangement, all their food are pushed out on the carts like the ones below. we ordered 2 desserts actually! banana flambe and baked Alaska. in the Aladdin saucer is rum and the waitress is lighting the rum on fire with the fire source from the stove! its called an baked Alaska cos the burning rum is poured onto the baked Alaska to char the meringue! We order 2 servings of the baked alaska so it looks bigger. you can see some parts of the meringue already charred and the fire is still going on =) it was quite a show! notice also on the left the banana flambe is also simmering in rum again! the waitress who served us was really young and probably inexperienced. the banana flambe show was really short while we witnessed a really long banana flambe cooking experience by another senior waitress on another table! wot a bummer! So anyway this is the final product! banana soaked in rum with vanilla icecream! this is really nice! even the icecream! =) The highlight of the restaurant has gotta be this! my slice of the baked alaska. its vanilla icecream with a rum soaked chiffon cake crust and bits of peach =) this is only prepared upon request and i've read in reviews that with the restaurant gets crowded, this dish may get sold out! we really love this! and whilst we were there, 90% of the diners ordered the baked alaska as well! now if you are thinking of going to shashlik to try the baked alaska after reading this, think again. they have a policy of no shorts and slippers. and thats not all, to order the dessert, each diner must have a main course, entrees are not counted! =\ the waiters and waitress do not smile and look like they have worked there since our nation's independence. haha. good find anyway!
